A Pharma Plant Within University Walls: PSU Launches Drug Production Based on Spruce Cones

Perm State University (PSU) is moving from theory to creating finished products. On February 9, 2026, on Russian Science Day, the Laboratory of Innovative Pharmaceutical Developments opened at the Faculty of Chemistry. This unique site provides a full cycle: from formula development to manufacturing products in volumes intended for commercial sale.

Details of the project were published in an official statement by the PSU Media Center. The project aims to develop scientific and technical entrepreneurship and promote the university’s own brand.

Technologies Across 120 Square Meters

The laboratory is designed to reflect industrial process flow. It includes an isolated entrance, a raw material preparation block, utility rooms, production and packaging shops, and a finished product shipping zone.

The equipment allows for the extraction of substances from plant and animal raw materials while preserving a wide range of biologically active components. As noted by the university, the installed units surpass the capabilities of standard laboratory equipment by tenfold.

Spruce Cone Cream: From Development to Series

One of the existing developments planned for mass production at the new site is the “Elaplan” cream. Its key component is spruce cone extract.

“Its active component is spruce cone extract, an accessible and inexpensive raw material with a pronounced antioxidant effect. The launch of the new laboratory will allow for the introduction of this product into mass production.”

— Pyotr Mashchenko, Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy at PSU

Practice for Future Industrial Pharmacists

The laboratory will serve as a key educational space for “Pharmacy” students, allowing them to master the profession in conditions as close as possible to a real plant.

“Here, students of the Faculty of Chemistry majoring in ‘Pharmacy’ will be able to undergo practice related to industrial pharmacy. There are many specialized enterprises in our region, and already during their university studies, students will be able to gain real production experience and competencies in demand in the real sector of the economy. Additionally, this expands the possibilities for releasing products under the Perm University brand.”

— Pyotr Mashchenko, Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy at PSU

A Unique Regional Advantage

The Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at PSU, Irina Mashevskaya, noted that the opening of the laboratory is a vital step for practical training:

“This is a unique laboratory for the region, an important educational space, and a competitive advantage for our faculty. We pay great attention to the practical training of students. Today the laboratory is open for public presentation; however, in the near future, we plan to undergo its certification, which will significantly expand our capabilities.”

— Irina Mashevskaya, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at PSU

The launch of this facility will enable the university to produce pilot batches of soft and hard dosage forms, turning scientific research into real market products.
